MLK Day of Service

The MLK Day Challenge is multi-state program funded through North Carolina Campus Compact (NCCC) and Corporation for National Community Service (CNCS). NCCC awards other state campus compacts based on grant applications sent in from perspective campuses. Two different awards are given based on the quality and scope of these applications: $2,500 or $5,000. OCC was fortunate enough to have received $5,000 for MLK Day 2011.

This year, the grant helped our campuses to mobilize over 1,300 college students and youth who completed service projects throughout the state of Ohio while reflecting on Dr. King’s life. 10 campuses organized projects throughout the state that assisted local agencies in expanding or improving their abilities to help the people they serve. The MLK Challenge broke down barriers amongst participants and between the students and their local community using a unique program model that frames the day as a “challenge” utilizing the resources, creativity, and planning ability of each team or group of young people. In addition to unifying diverse participants around a service project, the MLK Challenge provided opportunities for participants to reflect upon, honor, and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Note for the 2011-2012 academic year:

Unfortunately, the MLK Day Challenge was not funded for the 2011-2012 academic year due to federal budget cuts.  For additional grant opportunities, please see the national Campus Compact website.
