In this pilot year WSU Lake Campus Connect2Complete has partnered with several campus organizations for donation drives, community service events, and staff development days spent working in the campus community garden. These events connect C2C students with the local community and increase their chance of enrolling in the next semester, and also help the campus community and local community become familiar with Connect2Complete and its purpose.
The project Heather is most proud of this year was coordinating the C2C program to test in-class service-learning strategies in an American Literature class, where the class performed short service projects related to each of the novels they were required to read to better connect class content to the projects. The feedback from students was very positive with most saying they were forced out of their comfort zones and ultimately enjoyed the work. A number of new community partnerships were established through these projects and the relationships will develop further in the next academic year with the introduction of additional service-learning courses.
Heather chose this position shortly after graduating from Wright State University Lake Campus with her Bachelor’s degree in Middle Childhood Education and has committed to serve a second year with the Ohio Campus Compact C2C program. With one year of service under her belt she is still excited about helping first year students to achieve success as she did at the WSU Lake Campus, and sees herself continuing to work in the higher education field or in the nonprofit sector once she has completed her VISTA service.
