Miami University Hamilton

Miami University Hamilton is one of two regional campuses of Miami University. A wealth of expanding facilities are complemented by Miami Hamilton's greatest assets: a small, friendly student body, attentive, highly qualified faculty and staff; and unmatched student services, designed to accommodate a busy life. Miami Hamilton Downtown is a multi-use center for civic engagement and the arts, offering an array of programs including live music, art displays, theatrical performances, educational classes and lectures, and a convenient venue for scholarship activities and community meetings. This VISTA position will co-report to the Director of the Center for Civic Engagement who works with the Downtown Center and the Coordinator of Student Activities and Service Learning who advises student organizations and volunteer programs.

Position Description:

The Community Placement Coordinator VISTA will serve as a full-time member of the Miami University Hamilton staff. In return, the VISTA receives benefits as outlined in the AmeriCorps VISTA Program, including travel reimbursement, an Education Award of $4,725 or an end of the year stipend of $1,200, health care insurance for themselves, coverage by Federal Workers Compensation, attendance at a 3-day Pre-Service Orientation in Indianapolis in July, and service training and in-service training to enhance skills. The VISTA will also be provided with a private, off-campus apartment plus utilities, equipped with a kitchen and bathroom valued at $7,200, and a grocery stipend of $4,015, a campus office with computer and phone and many opportunities for a self-directed experience. The position starts in July, 2009.

Specific Details of the Position:

- Service Placements  Collaborate with local agencies, students, and faculties to arrange curricular and co-curricular service placements. Students may be required to complete a service learning component for a class or program, or may be interested in volunteering for a personal reason. The VISTA will help meet student needs across the service spectrum as well as manage records and risk management policies for service placements.

- Co-Advise the Rotaract Club of Miami Hamilton  This student organization, formed in March 2009, focuses on community service and professional development to benefit the community and its members. The group hopes to develop ongoing service projects as well as support student interest in volunteering. The VISTA will provide guidance and support to the students in their efforts, attend regular meetings, and act as a liaison between the group and faculty and staff. The VISTA will also support the Rotaract Club in their planning and implementation of an Alternative Spring Break trip for 2010.

- National Day of Service  Coordinate and plan a large-scale day of service for the campus community, in conjunction with a National Day of Service (i.e. Martin Luther King Day of Service, 9/11 National Day of Service, etc.).

- Regular Service Outings  Develop and promote weekly or bi-weekly volunteer outings to a local agency. These outings generally last 2-3 hours and are one-time events to expose students to various community partners. An additional reflection opportunity will coincide with the outing.

- Miami Hamilton Downtown  Miami Hamilton Downtown has grown quickly as a programming and event hub for all of Hamilton, and the VISTA will help expand the outreach of events. The VISTA will coordinate a monthly benefits bank (benefits enrollment program done jointly with a community agency) at the Center as well as other programs reaching diverse community constituents.

- Outreach  Assist with expanding current offerings by working jointly with students, faculty, staff, and other campuses to promote service-learning and engagement.

- Other Opportunities  The Miami Hamilton campus is growing quickly in the area of service and has a variety of resources available to dedicate toward service and engagement initiatives. The VISTA is welcome to bring his / her personal experiences and interests to the position.
