2008 Ohio Campus Vote Initiative

About Our Program
Ohio Campus Compact started a voter engagement initiative in June of 2008 to encourage and support student involvement in the 2008 General Election. Although the program was not focused exclusively on voting, a large part of the program consisted of voter registration and mobilization efforts. The program also engaged students in various public policy topics, political campaigns, and voting rights protection issues.
Outcomes
- Awarded over $12,000 of mini-grants that funded over 50 projects at nineteen different campuses.
- Pulled together state and national resources for a comprehensive “one-stop shop” website of pertinent election information.
- Advised about 50 campuses on how to setup meaningful voter engagement activities.
- Encouraged and facilitated cross-campus collaboration.
- Promoted awareness of student voting rights and assisted campuses with providing proper voter identification for students.
- Registered about 8000 students directly though our efforts and reached thousands of others around the state.
- Established a foundation of election programming so institutions can continue to conduct voter engagement and public policy programs in the future.
Beyond the Vote Planning
Now that the General Election is over, Ohio Campus Compact is evaluating the current needs of our member campuses and determining the future of this project. We are sharing our thoughts with various Ohio foundations and will be seeking funding in the coming months.
In the meantime, check out these new resources and websites to help keep students engaged in the political process:
