SOCHE logoDear OCC members & friends,

Welcome to the April 2009 issue of the Ohio Campus Compact Newsletter. This month we are spotlighting a recent survey of faculty, "The American College Teacher: National Norms for the 2007-08 HERI Faculty Survey,"
which is issued by the Cooperative Institutional Research Program at the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA. The results reported are based on the responses of 22,562 full-time college and university faculty members at 372 four-year colleges and universities nationwide. The responses are weighted to provide an accurate profile of the teaching population at four-year colleges.  Highlighted in this year's survey report are faculty responses to questions in several categories related to social change. Some of the responses around faculty as social change agents include:

75.2 percent of professors now say that they work to "enhance students'
knowledge of and appreciation for other racial/ethnic groups." That is a
gain of 17.6 percentage points in the three years since the survey was
last done.

55.5 percent of professors consider it "very important" or "essential"
to "instill in students a commitment to community service," an increase of 19.1 percentage points since the last survey.

71.0 percent believe that colleges should be "actively involved" in solving
social problems, up 4.1 percentage points in three years.
Sincerely,
Richard Kinsley
Executive Director, OCC

June 12:  OCC VISTA Banquet at Denison University

Campus Highlights
Mount Union CollegeAmanda Espenschied-Reilly, Director of Service Learning and Community Service at Mt. Union reported: Alliance City Schools were awarded 2 VISTA Summer Associates through Second Harvest Food Bank to help with the summer meal program.  While about 2400 kids in Alliance are on free or reduced lunch during the year the number of kids served in the summer is about 400.  Alliance City Schools hopes that the VISTAs will be able to find out what causes the drop in numbers and what can be done to better reach the targeted populations.  I decided to apply for this position because of my experience with OCC VISTAs, which truly has inspired me.  As a 10 month/yr employee I saw the summer program as my opportunity to serve and when an opening came available in my own community I jumped on it.  _____________________

UC Clermont CollegeBarbara Wallace, Director, College Success Program at UC Clermont College was awarded the Community College National Center for Community Engagement's 2009 Service Learning and Civic engagement Collaboration Award in the category of Collaboration with Social Agencies.  Congrats to Barbara!

Miami University
Ann Cashell, a senior interdisciplinary studies major from Oxford, is a top  10 winner of the United Nations Foundation's Climate Crews contest.  Cashell worked with Stephanie Louise Mettler, Miami '08, a VISTA in Miami's office of community engagement and service, to submit a sustainability proposal for the contest.  Mettler and Cashell's proposal focused on projects that could be initiated by an office of sustainability.  An example is "lights out on campus", suggesting that lights could be turned off in classrooms and dorms between noon and 2pm when sunlight is at its peak.  Cashell attended a 3-day training seminar at the U.N. Foundation where she accepted the $500 grant.  Way to go Ann and Louise!

Denison University

Saturday, March 28 was our biggest volunteer day of the year: Big Red's Big Day! We had over 22 groups working with organizations on and off campus with a total of 350 Denison student volunteers. For example, our physics club and environmental organization did a Nature hike, physics demos, and planetarium show with 25 girl scouts. Our campus improv group and Newman group did interactive acting with and cooked lunch for a teen center in Newark! Among all the activities we also make cookies, dog biscuits, Easter cards, and dolls for various community organizations!  Reported by Eryn McGowan, OCC VISTA.

Wilmington College

Tony Staubach, a 23-year-old AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer and Wilmington College graduate, runs a College Access program that was featured in an article by Connie Schultz.  Read Tony's Article.
