Dear OCC members & friends,
Welcome to the November 2009 issue of the Ohio Campus Compact Newsletter. This month we are spotlighting The National Conference on
Citizenship annual Civic Health Index report for 2009, entitled Civic Health in Hard Times. In addition to the 40 measures of civic participation that compose the Civic Health Index, the survey this year included timely questions about such topics as the perceived impact of the recession on civic life.
The NCoC summarizes the main findings as follows: "As economic distress continues through the summer and into the fall, Americans are suffering from a 'civic foreclosure' that is limiting the range and depth of their civic engagement. The survey's results reflect the hard choices
Americans have made during the downturn, with 72 percent of respondents saying they have cut back on time engaged in civic participation, which includes time spent volunteering, participating in groups or performing other civic activities in their communities. Public perception supports this finding, as 66 percent of Americans say they feel other people are responding to the current economic downturn by looking out for themselves, with only 19 percent saying people around them are responding to the recession by helping each other more."

National Campus Compact Survey
needs your inputThis survey seeks to capture data for the 2008-2009 academic year. Only one survey should be completed for each Campus Compact member higher education institution. The last day to submit information on behalf of your institution is Friday, December 4, 2009.
We are relying on your feedback to calculate student and faculty involvement in community service, service-learning and civic engagement activities; to understand institutional support/culture, community-campus partnerships, and assessment; and to gauge satisfaction with Campus Compact programs and services.
This survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete if you have prepared in advance to answer the questions. We encourage you to view and/or print a blank copy of the entire survey before starting it online. To complete the survey, click here
Thanks to Mount Union College, Notre Dame College, Urbana University, and Walsh University for taking the lead in Ohio to complete the survey!

Campus Highlights
University of Cincinnati
The Zoo-Mates program kicked off on this month, with a Meet & Greet for the selected mentors and mentees. Next Wednesday, mentors will meet their assigned mentees and their parents during a celebration dinner at the Cincinnati Zoo. Participants will get to experience different animals, including an Anatolian Shepard, a guard dog that protects sheep from cheetahs in Africa!
Notre Dame College
Seven students (and one Notre Dame alum) traveled with Jennifer Scott (Notre Dame College's OCC AmeriCorps VISTA) to Spencer, West Virginia. They stayed at the Catholic Worker Farm in the area. The students spent time working on a house that needed to be scraped, primed, and painted. They also hauled wood, and worked at the Black Walnut Festival.
Miami University
October is the month Adopt a School and America Reads get going at MU and this year they have hit record numbers. Over 650 Miami students found a way to tutor children and/or adult learners in Oxford, Middletown, Hamilton, or Cincinnati. This semester the program will generate over 1000 volunteer hours per week and touch hundreds of lives.
Mount Union College
A giant metal bug, a peaceful pond and a colorful mural along a fence lined with brightly painted bowling balls are all part of a new memory garden at Villa Maria Dementia Care. This is the culmination of a year long service-learning project involving the MUC art department.

Marietta College
On October 24th, The Marietta College community engaged in the national day of service "Make a Difference Day." For this day, the College had over 250 volunteers at 30 different service sites across Marietta and Washington County. While the projects all had diverse focuses, I worked closely with the projects that focused specifically on hunger relief. I am proud to report that our students collected over 3050 cans for local food pantries, created over 40 bowls for an Empty Bowls meal in the Spring, winterized two area community gardens, created two cold frame gardens for a local school and served over 75 people at a free community meal. Overall, our students were successful in creating awareness about the hunger relief efforts while engaging in direct service for the greater community.
Shawnee State University
On Saturday October 10th the Ohio River Valley Red Cross came to Shawnee to train students in their Mass Care Disaster Relief program. In the case of a disaster in the Ohio River Valley area this group of volunteers among others will be called upon to help run shelters and care for those affected. There were 20 students trained including members from the TKE's and the M3C AmeriCorps Fellows. A special thanks to all the Red Cross volunteers who helped with the training, Mary Arnzen of the Ohio River Valley Red Cross, and Kelly Hatas and Sarah Lowe AmeriCorps *VISTA's for making this possible.
