Language in Action Symposium

The “Language in Action” symposium will bring together educators who are interested in improving the use of service-learning pedagogy as it involves undergraduates’ work with immigrant populations. The symposium may be of particular interest to instructors of Spanish language/culture courses whose students may work with populations learning English as a second language; faculty from other disciplines whose students work with migrant and immigrant populations; coordinators of service-learning programs that support undergraduates’ engagement with immigrant populations; teachers of English as a Second Language who coordinate service placements in their schools. We especially encourage participation by teams comprising these different types of instructors.

Thursday, January 7th: Early Arrival Reception and Social Time (Faculty Common, Burton Morgan Center)
Friday, May 14th: Symposium Agenda (Burton Morgan Center)

9:00-9:30am: Welcome

9:30-10:15am: Keynote delivered by Dr. Terrell Morgan, Associate Professor: Spanish and Portuguese, The Ohio State University

10:15-10:30am: Break

10:30-Noon: Break-out discussions in cohorts (Issues facing Faculty, Service-Learning Coordinators, ESL Instructors, etc.). These discussions will occur twice in two, 45 minute intervals.

Noon-12:30pm: Report to Group

12:30-1:30pm: Lunch and discussion

1:30-2:30pm: Small group discussion with mixed-cohort groups focused on solutions to issues

2:30-2:45pm: Break

2:45-4:00: Full gropu conversation facilitated by Dr. Connie DeJong, Arts and Sciences Scholars Coordinator, The Ohio State University

4:00-4:30pm: Lessons learned, Evaluation
