2nd Edition, October 2002, 53 pages, $20.00

This is a practical guide for faculty on using the instructional strategy known as service-learning. The first of seven sections provides an operative definition of service-learning. The second section outlines general approaches to course-based service-learning. Remote planning and assessing institutional support and resources are covered in section three. The fourth section examines the issues of service placement and monitoring community service activities. Section five is dedicated solely to assessing service-learning outcomes resulting from community service activities. The appendices include sample forms and internet resources.

"Service Learning and the University Role in Community Development" by Dr. Wendy A. Kellogg, Assistant Professor of Urban Studies, Cleveland State University.

1999, 37 pages, $10.00

This document looks at the University mission and community development in urban neighborhoods. The conclusions are then expanded to encompass service-learning, and subsequent benefits and program/institutional preconditions and support for service-learning. The focus then shifts to community-based projects, and looks at project emphasis and information for neighborhood-based environmental planning and action. A specific example, the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood project site is examined, and other projects are then listed. The monograph concludes with summary statements, conclusions, and a list of references.
