Ohio SIS in Action

Brooke Weisenburger, a Students in Service member at Otterbein University, coordinates instrument petting zoos for elementary school children, exposing them to a variety of musical instruments, from violas to drums to saxophones. Her program, called The BEAT, is especially important as music programs in the local schools face elimination or significant reduction in funding.
Lucas Homan, a Students in Service member at Otterbein University, coordinates volunteer activities at the Otterbein Community Garden. This past season, the garden donated over 800 pounds of produce to a local food pantry.
Patricia Jimenez, a Students in Service member at Otterbein University, assisted at the Otterbein Community Garden this past season. Otterbein's most regular water -person, she made sure that the plants were well-irrigated, which is very important in the hot months. Here, Patricia is watering the vertical gardens, which grew a variety of herbs that were donated to the food pantry with recipes to accompany them.
Lucy Pierce, Students in Service member at Otterbein University, plants tulip and daffodil bulbs in raised beds at the Otterbein Community Garden during the Fall Open House. Lucy, who assisted in the coordination of the event, has continued her involvement with the garden beyond her term as a Students in Service member.
Here again is Otterbein SIS member Lucy Pierce, posing this time with some of the garden supplies at the Otterbein Community Garden during the Fall Open House. The Open House, which Lucy helped to coordinate, was an opportunity for the gardeners, interested community members, and Otterbein campus to come together to celebrate the garden's successful season, during which over 800 pounds of produce was donated to a local food pantry.
