What major projects do you work on as a VISTA
Currently, I am working with my college and various local non-profits to support college access and Bridges Out Of Poverty initiavite. On my campus, COTC, I work in the Gateway’s Center for Access and Retention. There my responsibilities include recruiting volunteers for the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, serving as a member on our Campus Bridges out of Poverty Guiding Team, and acting as a College Ambassador and Liason with Community Groups who work with at- risk youth (Goodwill, Foster Care, YES Clubhouse, A Call to College, etc ).
For A Call to College, I serve as “the feet on the street” as I assist with their PEAK ( Providing Early Awareness and Knowledge) Program by recruiting volunteers, creating curriculum, assisting in the implementation, and acting as a near peer role model to 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th grade Newark City School students.
Why did you choose to be an AmeriCorps VISTA?
I chose to be an Ohio Campus Compact volunteer because while at Denison University I had various opportunities to work with the Newark and Licking County community through volunteering, my job in the Alford Center for Service Learning, through my classes, and later through my Summer Research Project. From my various interactions I grew fond of the community and its potential and felt compelled “act local.”
“It is from the numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”
